Chapter 6 - Implementation, Support & Quality Monitoring

This chapter covers the living project. It answers: How do we keep the experience safe, meaningful, useful and adjustable while it is happening?

This chapter runs from the volunteer’s first day of work to the point where the placement is stable, supported, monitored and ready to close. It covers six phases: starting work and task supervision, the ESC training cycle, mentoring and wellbeing and learning support, the mid-term review, safeguarding and conflict and crisis response, and ongoing project monitoring and quality checks. Several of these phases run in parallel rather than in sequence, and the chapter as a whole is where the programme’s quality standards are tested in practice. It should be planned within the project-level timeline.

Two roles must be kept distinct throughout the chapter. The supervisor or tutor manages the volunteer’s tasks and day-to-day work. The mentor supports the volunteer’s wellbeing and learning and is deliberately separate from the task line. Combining these roles, or combining the supervisor and coordinator roles, does not work in practice.
