Chapter 7 - Closing, Return, Impact & Continuity

This chapter closes the project and feeds the next cycle. It answers: What changed, what was learned, and how do we use this knowledge for the future?

Chapter 7 — Closing, Return, Impact & Continuity

This chapter closes the volunteering experience and turns it into learning for the volunteer, the organisation and the wider community. A project should not simply end when the volunteer leaves the accommodation or takes the final flight home. The final weeks and the period after return are important parts of the ESC experience because they help participants recognise what they learned, close practical and emotional processes, communicate the project’s results and transfer lessons into future activities.

The chapter therefore asks: What changed, what was learned, and how do we use this knowledge for the future?

It covers five connected areas: closing the practical and administrative side of the placement, supporting the volunteer’s return and future pathway, maintaining contact after the project, evaluating impact and disseminating results, and converting volunteer experience into alumni involvement and organisational learning.

The purpose is not only to complete the project correctly. It is to ensure that the knowledge created through months of volunteering does not disappear when one volunteer leaves and the next one arrives. This reflects the original EVoly logic that closure should convert individual experience into organisational knowledge.
