European Solidarity Corps (ESC) volunteering
When are volunteer projects published?
Projects with our partners abroad for the summer and autumn are published gradually from January. Updates are shared by newsletter and on social media.
How do I apply?
Complete the application form on the project page. No cover letter or CV is required unless the project posting says otherwise.
Can I participate if I have done ESC/EVS before?
Only if your earlier service was shorter than two months. Participants of long-term service cannot repeat an ESC project.
Do I need to live in Germany?
Yes. We can only send volunteers who have their residence in Germany.
Must I apply through the European Youth Portal?
No, please apply directly through the form on our website.
Do I need language skills?
Not necessarily. It is more important that you are motivated to learn the language(s) during your project.
Can I start later or shorten the duration?
Usually we can neither shorten a project by more than one month nor start significantly earlier or later.
When will I hear back?
Within 7 days after the application deadline, by email.
How old must I be?
You must be at least 18. Exceptions are possible if you turn 18 shortly after the project starts. Unfortunately, programme rules do not allow us to send anyone under 18.
Erasmus+ youth exchanges, training courses and study visits
Do I need German citizenship?
No, residence in Germany is enough. For ESC projects in Germany, any EU citizen with a permanent address in the EU qualifies.
Is English required?
For youth exchanges, no. For training courses and study visits your English must be good enough to participate fully.
What are the participation fees?
Between EUR 20 and 45 per project, as stated in each project description. Travel, accommodation and meals are funded separately.
Do I need professional youth work experience?
No, but you must be regularly active in youth work, for example as a volunteer, workshop organiser or group leader.
What is expected of participants?
Respect for other cultures, active participation and a positive contribution to the group's learning.
What happens after the project?
You submit your original travel tickets and boarding passes with the reimbursement form, co-author a report and may organise a dissemination event to share what you learned.
What is Youthpass?
A certificate that documents your participation and personal learning. The coordinators send you a form link, you describe what you learned and then receive a PDF.
When are travel costs refunded?
Usually 1 to 3 months after the project, depending on how quickly you hand in tickets and reports.
What if I get sick?
EU participants should carry their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC); non-EU participants should arrange travel insurance. ESC volunteers are covered by the programme insurance. If you are ill before departure, contact your sending organisation immediately.
